With the introduction of ISA 700 (Revised) Forming an Opinion and Reporting on Financial Statements, the content of standard audit report is changed with the aim of striking a balance between comparability and relevance. Other auditing standards such as ISA 570, ISA 720, ISA 705 and ISA 706 are also amended to reflect this aim. A new auditing standard (ISA 701) has been introduced. All these auditing standards will be effective for audits of financial statements for periods ending on or after 15 December 2016. What are the changes?

CPD Series: Hong Kong Annual Tax Update for 2016/2017 (Up to 30 Sep 2017)

About the Seminar:

There are six amendments made to the Inland Revenue Ordinance from May 2016 to September 2017. They include the introduction of qualifying corporate treasury centre, reporting by financial institutions on money laundry and know your client, implement automatic exchange of financial account information in tax matters (AEOI) and aircraft leasing concession.

During April 2016 to September 2017, Commissioner of Inland Revenue (CIR) issued three new Departmental Interpretation and Practice Notes (namely DIPN 51, 52 and 53) and revised DIPN 6 and 43). Inland Revenue Department (IRD) also issued a circular on the further explanation for the treatment of court-free amalgamation in December 2016. There were three tax cases decided in the last 18 months. They are CIR v Pang Fai, Poon Cho Ming, John v CIR and Perfekta Enterprises Ltd v CIR concerning whether certain income is chargeable to salaries tax or profits tax.

This seminar will examine the aforesaid change in IRO, DIPN, IRD’s practice and the decisions in the tax cases and their implications.

Areas to be covered in this seminar:

  1. The amendments to Inland Revenue Ordinance in 2016 and 2017;
  2. The new and revised Departmental Interpretation and Practice Notes;
  3. The tax treatment on amalgamation of companies under Companies Ordinance;
  4. The tax cases decided from April 2016 to September 2017

About the Speaker:

Patrick Ho is a qualified accountant. He is currently a Principal Lecturer in FTMS Training Systems (HK) Ltd. He was formerly an Associate Professor and Visiting Professor of Department of Accountancy and Law of Hong Kong Baptist University and Adjunct Professor of Department of Accountancy of City University of Hong Kong. He has accumulated over 35 years of accounting, auditing, taxation and teaching experience from international accounting firms, Inland Revenue Department and universities. He was the examiner and assessor for various professional bodies (including ACCA, HKICPA, ICSA and The Taxation Institute of Hong Kong).

Patrick was awarded a Bachelor degree in Law from University of London, a Master degree in Law and a MBA both from The University of Hong Kong and the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws from City University of Hong Kong.

Patrick is the sole author of “Hong Kong Taxation and Tax Planning” which has been widely used by various universities and tertiary institutions in Hong Kong since 1995.
